PickThisCar – Side Block

Today Jared launched a competition on youtube to design his youtube partners side block.  After about 45 minutes of toiling around inkscape I created this.   I know it’s not really my best, work but i think it’s pretty entertaining.  Hopefully Jared will share this common liking.

Anyway the competition ends on the 10th of October.  I’m pretty sure there is going to be a lot more impressive entries, but at least I gave it a shot.  Only time will tell (and Jared) who the winner is.

I honestly don’t know why I even bother with concept sketches.  I never follow the designs that I originally intended to create.  I suppose I just work better when I’m at the table with a blank slate and my only goal is to create.  (No pun intended)  However this time around I did have a reason to deviate from the project plan.

I felt that the planned design resembled the graphics too much already on the bebo page.  This was intentional in the original planning but later reconsidered.  I didn’t want the advertisement to infringe on the copyrights of bebo.  As a result I scratched the whole Idea.

All in all I’m quite satisfied with the design. I’m a little worried that it doesn’t exactly portray an image hosting site and more of a teen dating site.  I wanted to draw int he audience with the appeal of the model.  After all Bebo is a social networking site with a large percentage of female teens.  Hopefully the staff at omgupload will still approve of the design.

Omgupload.com has offered me the opportunity to produce another advertisement for them.  This time it’s for the social networking site Bebo.  This is another upscale type website with pretty steep advertising costs.  Thank god for Google Ad Sense.  Anyway I have one particular design concept that I would like to work on.

I don’t know how well it will fly with omgupload.com or bebo.  The advertisement is cleverly designed to look like part of page.  Much like those annoying virus scan advertisements disguised as real ‘windows’.  I hope that it will pass the advertising standards or it’s back to the drawing boards.

Above is the concept sketch. Below the main header there will be a collection of images being ‘sucked’ into a URL bar.  This represents the photos transitioning from a hard drive onto the omgupload servers.  I may play around with the positioning though. I want to make use of as much space as possible while still keeping the image clean.  This means that the URL bar will most-likely be moved above the photos or below it.

You’ll see the final product of this advertisement soon. It’s due by the end of the month but I think I’ll get it in ahead of time.

Well… They’re in.  That’s right, my omgupload banner contest submission has finally been sent.  I’m up against some tough competition this time around so I have no idea how this is going to playout. All I can say is, I’ll be glad to know I won (or lost) against some amazing art.

What I find to be hilarious is that I didn’t choose any of my design concepts. [one | two]. I went with an entirely different concept that just popped into my head a few minutes before I begun work on the project. I suppose going on a whim at the last moment isn’t always the best thing to do. However in this instance, I’m glad I did.

Hopefully I won’t get disqualified for submitted two designs (eek!). However I did mention to use the first design in the event that I’m only allowed one submission. Here’s the artwork at a glance:

Wish me luck 🙂

omgupload banner submission This is my submission for the omgupload.com banner competition. Hosted on Habbos.net. I’m not sure how many entries there are because all entries were to be submitted by private message.

I find the prizes quite generous for a simple banner ad: 10 Club sofas on Habbo.com.au, Banner featured on alexa.com for two weeks, and 2 months of premium on Habbos.net (where the competition was posted). My main goal for entering is getting featured on Alexa. The club sofas don’t really interest me because that’s not my local Habbo Hotel.

Good luck to the rest of the competitors seeking out the same prize. I’m sure what ever work you submit will be just as awesome as I think mine is.

Anyway apart from the banner, I created the slogan/trademark “share with the world.” The owner and developer of omgupload.com thought that it was fair enough to possibly use it across their site. I have given him full permission to use it any way shape or form as long as he doesn’t intend to charge for his services any time in the future. We’ll just see where that ends up. (So far no changes to the site)
